Meaning of station Name | "Kaikoku" means liberated isolationism. "Shimoda Ninato" is a port name where this michinoeki locates. Shimoda Port was the first port opened in Japan at the end of the Edo period, and became a symbol of the opening of Japan to the outside world when Perry's fleet arrived in 1854. |
